Prolific Hawaiian artist and Hokuleʻa crew member Keala Kai gave us the gift of his waʻa (canoe) art for our tea packaging, which details the special story of how this drawing came about after an epic voyage to Japan. You can read about this on every tea product page + the back of each tea package.

What is Māmaki?

Māmaki is pronounced maah-mah-key and spelled with the kahakō, the macron, which lengthens the vowel. The kahakō has been omitted in some places due to searchability for the non-Hawaiian speaking audience and technical issues on some fonts that are used on this website, but the proper way to spell it is always with the kahakō, just like on our logo.

Māmaki Pipturus albidus is a stingless nettle that only grows in the Hawaiian Island chain. It has co-evolved with one of two native butterfly species, pulelehua (a.k.a. Kamehameha butterfly), who favors mamaki as its host plant to lay its eggs. Adult pulelehua (males) drink the sap of the koa tree, so a healthy native forest includes both koa and mamaki. As deforestation by humans have occurred, less and less mamaki and therefore the pulelehua are being seen in the wild. However, with the recent popularity of mamaki as a healthy tea product, many family-owned farms have been established on the Big Island of Hawaiʻi. Our māmaki comes from our own natural farm as well as from organic farms we partner with here on Hawaiʻi Island. The more mamaki there is, the more we can restore habitat for the pulelehua.

Mamaki is known for its high antioxidant value, mainly used as a healing tea in ancient and modern Hawaiian culture. Mamaki berries were traditionally used for sores and wounds, but the topical benefits of mamaki were unavailable on the market. As farmers and holistic healers, we combined our knowledge and intuition to infuse mamaki into our natural skincare products & tea blends, so you can experience its therapeutic effects.

We are honored to be the only skincare company that features the beautiful and nourishing māmaki plant.

Hawaiian Sandalwood Mamaki Balm
$40.00

Limited Edition! An all-over skin healing balm with Hawaiian Sandalwood

Our most "local" product! Woodsy and grounding, this balm is popular with men and women, from soothing bug bites and itchy skin to beard and hair conditioning.

Using the same healing formula as our regular Coconut Māmaki Balm, this special ʻIliahi (Hawaiian Sandalwood) version uses 100% pure Hawaiian Sandalwood essential oil to add a light woodsy scent and additional skin-healing and calming properties.

Sandalwood is known for its deep and contemplative aroma, which is why it’s been used in religious and spiritual practices around the world for centuries.

Made in Hawaii from organic coconut + olive oil and local beeswax, infused with our farm-grown mamaki (Hawaiian nettle) with the precious essential oil of Hawaiian Sandalwood from the Big Island of Hawaiʻi.

The oil is only harvested from already fallen or dead trees to prevent overharvesting, which decimated the native forests in the past. Native insects like the yellow-faced bees are attracted to the ‘Iliahi flowers, another reason why we love supporting native plant regeneration.

Māmaki and ʻIliahi are both important parts of the native Hawaiian forest.

The more māmaki we grow, the more habitat there is for the pulelehua to thrive. Traditionally used as a tea, antioxidant-loaded māmaki is an endemic Hawaiian nettle that we grow and infuse in the balm for its clean, skin-soothing properties.

Purchasing this product helps the native Kamehameha Butterfly (pulelehua) who uses mamaki as its host plant. This ʻIliahi edition also supports the Hawaiiani Sandalwood reforestation project (the biggest in the history of Hawaiʻi) on the Kealakekua Mountain Reserve on Hawaiʻi Island.

These products are handmade in small batches on the island of Hawaii and ships directly from here via USPS Priority Mail, which typically takes 3-5 business days within the US and 2-6 weeks for International Shipping.

No-Itch Mamaki Skin & Paw Balm
$30.00

An all-natural paw & skin balm for dogs

Got itch!? Soothe your furry pal’s paws, elbows, and other skin areas that need them! Cracked paws, itchy skin, rashes, dry nose, bites and scrapes, you name it - any part of your dog that needs attention!

Start with a small pea-sized amount and massage into desired areas.

Although it is for external use only, it is made from 100% food-grade materials to keep your dogs safe. However, we do recommend putting socks on or distracting them after application because it is oil-based and they will most likely love to lick it off! (We take our dogs on a walk right after, or massage the balm into their paws or skin after a looong day at the beach!)

Pawfect for sensitive hooman (adults + kids) skin, too!

Caution: If redness or irritation occurs, discontinue use and consult your veterinarian. This product is not recommended for cats.

Store in dry, cool place, away from heat. This is a heat-sensitive product and will melt in super hot temperatures. If it ever does, you can put it inside the fridge to solidify.

This product ships directly from Hawai’i via USPS Priority Mail, which typically takes 3-5 business days within the US and 2 weeks for International Shipping.

  • Collagen-boosting Rambutan, which stimulates cell turn over, and

  • Skin-tightening coffee extract from premium Kona Coffee by Mountain Thunder Coffee Plantation, grown on the slopes of Hualalai Volcano.

“Lavalava” is a play on words: the rich black color and volcanic ash representing the abundance of lava in Hawai’i, and an ode to our Samoan roots, where the ‘ie lavalava (sarong) is a daily attire for both men and women.

“Wrap” your face with this luxurious, purifying Lavalava Mask for softer and smoother skin. Each jar is good for about 20 applications.

To use: Apply about 1 tsp of mask on clean skin and spread evenly over face. Wash off after 10-15 minutes. Make it a daily ritual or at least twice a week; can be done any time of day. Formulated for sensitive skin.
